Iranian Film Fest

I was with my Norwegian companion, Mads, at an Iranian film festival, and we were watching Bani Etemad's Nargess. He was getting antsy, so I handed him a hundred dollar bill and told him to go and get a Coke (TM) or something. He left immediately afterwards. I turned to the person next to me, and whispered an apology for my friend's behavior.

"Some people just don't get the subtle nuances of Iranian film," he said. The voice sounded familiar.
"I agree wholeheartedly."

I introduced myself, and he shook my hand.

"I'm Keanu Reeves. It's good to meet you. This film is especially telling. I love the way Iranian cultural constraints affect the DH Lawrencian Oedipal paradigm. The need for the older lover to play the male's mother in order to pursue the 'conventional' relationship with the younger girl is perfect."

"I personally love how well she tells the story from the point of view of the older woman, and not the young man, which seems to be indicative of films featuring the Oedipal complex, like The Graduate, and Spanking the Monkey."

"So true, so true."
